A Study of Toothbrushing Instruction for Parents by Using Video
The purpose of this study was to determine whether the video instruction in the toothbrushing for children could improve parents knowledge in toothbrushing and toothbrushing method in children. Subjects were one hundred guardians of children under 8 years old attending the department of pediatric dentistry. The guardians were interviewed for their general information, then these two steps were carried out one by one for each guardians, once before and once after the video instruction was demonstrated. Firstly, the subject was asked to complete a question- naire to evaluate his/her knowledge in toothbrushing for children, then he/she was asked to show the observer his/her brushing techniques in the phantom head for scoring. The data were analyzed statistically using the pair t-test and ANOVA. After attending the video, it was found that the guardians had significantly higher knowledge scores (p<0.05) and had significantly improved their brushing scores (p<0.05). Both the improvement of knowledge and brushing technique were not related to sex, age, educational level and occupation of the guardians. However, there was a relationship between a past child and parent dental experience and the improve- ment of brushing knowledge. Numbers of children in the family was also related to the improvement of brushing technique. This study indicates that the use of the present video instruction could be an alternative to enhance the parents' knowledge and to promote dental health in children.
