Effectiveness of a Health Education via Personal Information Compared with Multimedia Health Information on Adherence to Hot Moist Application in Masticatory Muscle Pain Patients
Hot moist applied onto muscle pain has been known as a useful tool to relieve the masticatory pain. However, many patients in TMD clinics have not been adherence with the hot moist application protocol. It has been known that the efficient delivery of health education can increase the adherence in several therapeutic protocols. Therefore, in the present study, we compared the effectiveness between two methods of health education: personal information and multimedia information to improve the adherence with the hot moist protocol in the patients with masticatory pain. Ninety-three new patients with masticatory pain were included in this study. All subjects were divided with the method of blocked randomization. Forty-seven patients were in the control groups, received the personal information as the health education and forty-six were in the experimental group, and received the multimedia information as the health education. The health education was given once at the first visit. Two week after their education, all subjects were back with their diary reports about their self application with hot moist applied onto their masticatory pain and to answer the self-report questionnaires regarding the adherence to hot moist application. We found that all subjects complied with the hot moist all subjects complied with the hot moist application protocol. Means of the adherence scores in the control group and the experimental group were not significantly different (p > 0.05). Our findings suggest that both methods of the health education either the personal information or the multimedia information are not different in the adherence of patients to the hot moist application protocol.
