Effect of Sodium Hypochlorite Solution on Surface Roughness of Hard Denture Relining Resin Acrylic
Objective: To study the effect of 1% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) solution on the surface roughness of hard denture relining resin acrylic.
Methods: Twenty two specimens (15x15x3 mm.) were fabricated from chemical cured hard denture relining material (Tokuyama Rebase II Fast) and randomly divided into the control (n =11) and the test group (n = 11). Ten specimens from each group were selected for surface roughness testing and one remaining was prepared for surface study by scanning electron microscope. The control group was immersed 10 minutes in deionized water for 90 cycles and the test group was immersed 10 minutes in 1% NaOCl solution for 90 cycles. The surface roughness (Ra, µm) were tested before and after immersion. The percentage of mean surface roughness change for each specimen of control group and test group was calculated. The data was analyzed using t-test (α = 0.05).
Result: The percentage of mean surface roughness change of the control and the test group was not significantly different (p=0.087).
Conclusions: Denture disinfection by 10 minutes immersion in 1% NaOCl did not adversely affect the surface roughness of chemical cured hard relining material.
