The Importance and Management of Palato-gingival Groove
Palato-gingival groove is a tooth developmental anomaly usually found in upper lateral and upper central incisors. It is an important predisposing factor to localized periodontal disease. In some cases, the deep groove may communicate to the root canal system and may cause endodontic-periodontal lesion. Prognosis and treatment plan depend on the extension of the groove and the severity of attachment loss. Interdisciplinary treatment should be considered according to severity of the lesion, including periodontal, restorative and endodontic therapy. When the groove is deep and reach the apical part of the root, leading to severe alveolar bone loss, extraction will be considered. In order to prevent further tooth loss, the dentist should recognize palato-gingival groove as a routine examination.
