Development and Evaluation of the Efficiency of an Online Social Media Video to Promote Knowledge about Orthodontic Treatment in Adolescents : A Case Study of Students in Two Schools in AmphoeMuang Chiang Mai
Objectives: The purposes of this study were to develop a social media video to promote knowledge about orthodontic treatment in adolescents and to evaluate its efficiency and audience’s satisfaction.
Materials and Methods: This study comprised two sessions. The first session consisted of the production of an interactive video designed to be launched on the social media Youtube website to promote correct knowledge about orthodontic treatment for adolescent audiences. The second session consisted of the evaluation of the audiences’ correct knowledge in orthodontic treatment and their satisfaction via questionaires. The sample for this study consisted of 60 adolescents (16-18 years). The first questionnaire consisted of two parts. Part I was used to assess the audiences’ correct knowledge about orthodontic treatment in adolescents (total score 12 points), and to assess the audiences’ attitude to orthodontic treatment (total score 90 points) before and after watching the video. This questionnaire was administered before and after showing the video. Part II was used to evaluate the audiences’ satisfaction towards this video from four aspects: story continuity, content, benefit and overall satisfaction. This questionnaire was administered only after showing the video. The content validity of the questionnaire was approved by two experts, and tested in similar but separate samples. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and the Paired T-test.
Results: The audiences’ correct knowledge about orthodontic treatment in adolescents and attitude score were statistically significantly improved after watching the video (p< .001). The audiences’ mean satisfaction scores were high (score 4 of 5) for all four aspects: story continuity (4.544±0.523), content (4.446±0.471), benefit (4.571±0.618) and overall satisfaction (4.537±0.506).
Conclusions: The sample audiences were satisfied with this video. They had better understanding regarding orthodontic treatment in adolescents
after watching the video as well as improved attitude towards the orthodontic treatment.
